Hurricane Helene has claimed the lives of over 200 people in the Southeast, and first responders fear the death toll may rise as they continue their heroic rescue efforts. Financial costs are expected to rise to nearly $160 billion as vital infrastructure for clean water, energy, and transportation, is destroyed, necessitating food and water airlifts to affected areas. We are furious, and we demand change.
It is unacceptable that the corporations responsible for climate chaos are not being held accountable for the social devastation and financial costs of their actions.
We must unite and demand that our leaders address the root causes of these climate catastrophes, starting with a rapid transition away from fossil fuels.

How to take action locally against those responsible for the climate crisis
Right now, New York State is reviewing plans for the next 15-20 years of our energy transition. Locking in our dependence on fracked gas should be off the table, but that is exactly what the UK-based corporate gas utility, National Grid, is proposing.
Sane Energy is fighting back. Here is our recent filing to the state’s Public Service Commission (PSC) which continues to approve outrageous hikes to utility bills for ordinary New Yorkers to protect the profits of companies like National Grid.
This comment, recently submitted to the PSC, shows how National Grid inflates projected use to justify a fracked gas future for New York.
We demand:
A planned shutdown of National Grid’s toxic LNG facility in North Brooklyn
A clear denial of support for the Iroquois EXC pipeline
An investment in thermal energy networks and energy efficiency is commensurate with the need to reduce the demand for gas.

Please sign our new petition to support our demands and tell the PSC to reject National Grid’s proposal for obscene gas growth. Raising YOUR voice to stop continued investments in propping up the gas system is crucial to winning this fight!
Climate Week's fleeting focus on environmental issues during Hurricane Helene.
Sane Energy saw Climate Week as an opportunity to fight for climate justice. We seized the media moment to capture attention and sponsored events to raise awareness of the struggle for a sustainable future.
Here's a recap of our Climate Week initiatives:
🚶️ Walking Tours of National Grid’s LNG Facility: Our informative tours are proving so successful that National Grid has built an additional interior fence to prevent people from viewing their toxic facility. Participants are gaining valuable insights into the impacts of climate change in their neighborhoods, and the No North Brooklyn Pipeline Alliance is growing. Don't miss our next tour on Sunday, October 13 - sign up now!

📣 Public Power New York Rally: Our movement won the Build Public Renewables Act in 2023 to rapidly transition our state off fossil fuels, create tens of thousands of green jobs, lower utility bills, and close polluting peaker plants. But so far, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) that is tasked with building our public renewables–has refused to commit to building enough clean energy. So we brought the movement to them on September 24 at their headquarters in White Plains!
Sane Energy and our allies, including NYS Assembly Members Sarahana Shrestha and Bobby Carroll, grassroots groups, and New Yorkers from around the state, rallied at NYPA to send a clear message: we need a LOT of public renewables, and we need them now! After the rally ended, Assembly Member Shrestha delivered 700+ letters supporting our demands. You can sign a letter here! Stay tuned for updates and further actions–we will be packing statewide hearings this fall!

🚤 Ferry Talk & Action Report: Holes In The Wall Collective featured Sane Energy’s JK Canepa and Anna Tsomo of Sixth Street Community Center, a NoNBK Pipeline Alliance member org, in the closing ceremony of their Climate Week program and City-Wide Scavenger Hunt, Imagined Futures: This is Your City. In their Ferry Talk en route to Governor’s Island, JK and Anna spoke about the fight for a livable future going on in neighborhoods throughout the city. On Governors Island, participants were thrilled to take part in a ceremony with allies from the American Indian Community House, Climate Imaginarium, Next Epoch Seed Library, and Noelle Ghoussaini of SacredSpace, who led us in a closing ritual.
Together, we can create the world we need. Stay informed, stay involved!
