New Report: National Grid’s Dirty Double Standard

You’ve marched with us, sent comments, joined walking tours, and spoke out at the so-called “public” hearing. We’ve all been waiting for the independent report on National Grid’s long-term gas plan. It’s finally here. So—what does it say? What does it mean? Can we finally shut down this dangerous, toxic facility and start healing the land for our neighbors? What even is LNG, and why should you care? We break it all down in this week’s Sane Energy newsletter.
This week, National Grid’s Zombie Pipeline is BACK
National Grid is not only inflating its numbers to keep the North Brooklyn LNG facility alive, it’s now trying to jump on the Trump-era pipeline agenda by pushing to revive the dangerous and unnecessary Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline, which we defeated in 2020.
This Monday, June 2, National Grid rushed to request an extension from New York to update its long-term gas plan and make room for even more fracked gas from this pipeline! This move followed a comment from Governor Hochul after a meeting with Donald Trump suggesting that Williams could reapply for previously defeated pipelines in New York, so long as they comply with state law.
Meanwhile, National Grid has consistently delayed or outright refused to analyze clean energy alternatives, as required by New York’s climate law. Our letter urges the Public Service Commission (PSC) to reject National Grid’s request unless the company applies the same urgency and rigor to non-fossil fuel solutions that actually align with the law.
Independent Report Confirms What We’ve Been Saying: National Grid’s Gas Plan Fails the Climate Test
Last week, the independent contractor hired by the Department of Public Service released their long-awaited review of National Grid’s long-term gas plan. While the report didn’t go as far as we’d hoped, (especially considering the $1 million price tag), it confirmed key concerns we’ve raised for years. Most importantly, the report validates that National Grid has been neither transparent nor forward-looking in its handling of the Greenpoint LNG facility.
This is a big deal. An independent review backing up what frontline communities have been saying all along puts serious pressure on the Public Service Commission to act.
We now call on the PSC to hold National Grid accountable and uphold the state’s climate law. Sane Energy and our allies want a clear, community-driven plan to responsibly decommission the Greenpoint LNG facility and protect our neighbors.
This fight isn’t over.
