National Grid Tried to Convince State Utility Regulators that the Illegal Williams NESE Pipeline is Needed
At a packed meeting hosted by New York’s Department of Public Service on July 22, fierce opposition to National Grid’s revived push for the dangerous NESE pipeline erupted. Advocates from grassroots climate organizations tore into the proposal, calling it an unnecessary, costly, and climate-wrecking boondoggle. Participants questioned why the NESE pipeline, which had been rejected three times by New York State, was still on the table when National Grid had stated it had no supply shortfall. It appears that the utility is adding additional fossil fuel projects to its already bloated portfolio, raising serious concerns about corporate overreach.
We challenged National Grid’s attempt to shift the financial burden for this project onto ratepayers when the pipeline is intended to serve private data centers and AI expansion, rather than the public.
Williams NESE is a pipeline without a purpose.
National Grid’s forecasts for gas demand are outdated, and the company refuses to meaningfully evaluate the impact of non-pipeline solutions, including electrification and energy efficiency. Climate advocates made one thing clear at the July 22 meeting: Williams NESE is a pipeline without a purpose and has no place in a just and sustainable energy future.

August 9th: No Trump Pipelines March, Join Sane Energy Contingent!
On August 9, we’re standing up to tell Governor Hochul that New Yorkers expect her to reject these dangerous projects, just as the state has done before.
President Trump boasts that Hochul “caved” to his demands and agreed to revive long-dead dirty fracked gas pipelines, including the Williams’ Constitution and NESE pipelines, much to the delight of National Grid. We’re taking to the streets for a family- friendly march to let Hochul know that New Yorkers won’t accept any deal that hands our state over to National Greed and allows for the expansion of illegal fossil fuel infrastructure. These pipelines will pollute our air and water, harm our health, and worsen the climate crisis, and New Yorkers will be forced to foot the bill. .
We must fight back. The lives, safety, and health of our family, friends, and everything we love are on the line. Together, we can win – that’s how we defeated these pipelines the first time around. When we organize, we’re stronger than the oil and gas industry’s money, but we must speak up now before it is too late.
Join us to send a powerful message to Governor Hochul: NY says NO to Trump pipelines.
Sunday, July 27th, 12:00 pm Make T-shirts to Wear at the No Pipeline March
Let's get creative this weekend and print T-shirts to keep pipelines out of New York State! Join Sane Energy Project for a fun, screenprinting party in Crown Heights. There will be food and expert instruction from the printing masters at Shoestring Press as we print T-shirts for our contingent to wear in the Say No to Pipelines March, August 9th (details HERE). Please RSVP as space at the screenprinting party is very limited.
Sane Energy Project’s Michael Paulson Stands Up to Governor Hochul’s Misguided Nuclear Plans
Nuclear rebranding is having a moment, and Governor Hochul seems to be buying the hype. Lately, she’s been echoing the nuclear lobby’s talking points, earning praise from industry insiders.
But let’s be clear: uranium is not renewable, and nuclear energy isn’t safe or affordable. New York needs real solutions, such as wind, solar, and geothermal energy, not expensive, high-risk projects that take decades to build and leave behind radioactive waste. Nuclear energy is dangerous, and it doesn’t belong in our clean energy future. Sane Energy is pushing back hard. Sane Energy’s Michael Paulson is quoted in this recent piece in the Albany Times Union. He challenges the Governor’s nuclear narrative with facts and clarity.
Two Great Info Events in August!
Big love to Senator Julia Salazar and Assemblymember Emily Gallagher, amazing elected officials who worked with us to push for NY HEAT in the last legislative session and are key allies in our campaign to shut down the National Grid's dirty Greenpoint LNG facility. They are heroes working for their constituents, and they are kindly hosting Sane Energy for two events in August, where we’ll be talking about how the NY HEAT Act deal, the dirty Greenpoint LNG plant, and the renewed push for the Williams NESE pipeline are all connected through National Grid. Hope you can join us at these upcoming events:
August 7th Julia Salazar District 18 Climate Justice Summit

P.S. The UN’s top court just handed down a landmark opinion stating that climate change is an ‘existential threat’ and we need to act NOW. We know it’s dark times, but let's keep shining like the sun, and keep fossil fuels out of New York! Future generations are relying on us.
