Reject National Grid’s $3.8 Billion Rate Hike Proposal for Fossil Fuels
As concerned individuals, it is our responsibility to oppose National Grid's unjust rate hike proposal and advocate for a future free of fossil fuels
In recent years, New York City and Long Island residents have faced an alarming surge in utility rates tied directly to National Grid's relentless investments in their fracked gas system. The company's insatiable appetite for profit has led to a series of rate hikes on already overburdened customers. As they once again seek to increase rates, we must unite and voice our opposition to their unjust proposal.
The Current Situation
National Grid's latest request entails a staggering $3.8 billion rate hike, which would hit customers with an average monthly bill increase of $30. The implications are dire, especially for Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island residents who face bill hikes of around 30%.
The Environmental Impact
In addition to the financial burden placed on ratepayers, National Grid's reliance on a leaky and toxic gas system poses a grave threat to public health and exacerbates the climate crisis. With extreme weather events becoming increasingly common, we can no longer burn fossil fuels. New York State law underscores the urgent need to transition away from gas, which mandates a complete phase-out of fossil fuels by 2050.
Our Demands
In response to National Grid's proposal, we demand decisive action from the Public Service Commission (PSC) and Governor Hochul. Specifically, we call for:
Zero Investments in Fracked Gas Infrastructure: The governor and PSC must block National Grid's proposal for additional investments in fracked gas infrastructure.
Timely Retirement of the Greenpoint Energy Center: A detailed plan with an enforceable deadline of 2030 must be established to permanently retire the fossil fuel facility at National Grid's Greenpoint Energy Center in Brooklyn.
Investment in Sustainable Alternatives: Invest state and federal funds in developing thermal energy networks and energy efficiency initiatives, including retrofit and electrification readiness programs for low-income New Yorkers.
Background on the Greenpoint Energy Center
The gas storage facility, located at 287 Maspeth Avenue in Brooklyn, has a troubling legacy of environmental degradation. Built on land once inhabited by the Mespeatches, the facility continues the history of reckless exploitation of natural resources by Dutch colonial settlers and industrial giants like Standard Oil.
Today, the Greenpoint Energy Center serves as a stark reminder of the detrimental impact of fossil fuel infrastructure on local communities and the environment; it serves as a roadblock to efforts to remediate the area and revitalize Newtown Creek, perpetuating a cycle of pollution and harm.
As concerned individuals, it is our responsibility to oppose National Grid's unjust rate hike proposal and advocate for a sustainable future. By urging Governor Hochul and the PSC to reject their plan, we will move closer to fulfilling our commitment to combat climate change and protect our communities. Let's unite and demand that those entrusted with safeguarding our collective well-being stand up for people and the planet.
