Regulators Saying the Quiet Part Out Loud at NYS Budget Hearing
We Demand- Public Power, No Pipelines, No LNG
Hochul’s Agency Tasked with Cutting Emissions Shrugs at Law-Breaking Fossil Fuel Expansion: ‘It Is What It Is’
Governor Hochul and her regulators are a nightmare for the climate. She wants the legislature to let her ignore New York’s legally mandated climate goals under the CLCPA. Last week, we updated you on how inadequate her budget and State of the State were for the environment, and the hits just keep coming.
This week, we bring you the shrug and resignation from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). When asked at the budget hearing why the state is expanding fossil fuel generation in NYC, Doreen Harris said the quiet part out loud: “We would like our reality to be different, but it is what it is.”
This is not good enough. Our planet is relying on us to get off fossil fuels…yesterday! NYC needs publicly owned renewable energy, not poisoned air, higher bills, and a shrug from our leaders.
Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha and State Senator Kristen Gonzalez Speak Out in Support of Our Public Power Campaign
With record cold and price-gouging monopoly utilities causing our energy bills to soar, we have heroic legislators bringing solutions to the affordability and climate crisis. Let’s make sure it’s in the legislative budget! NYPA- Build public renewables!
Sane Energy Files Motion to Dismiss and Protest the Constitution Pipeline
Last year, the Supreme Court curtailed the scope of environmental reviews under federal law, clearing the way for faster approval of harmful, outdated pipelines. Sane Energy has filed a motion with FERC to challenge the Constitution Pipeline.
Sane Energy Teams Up with Lawmakers to Hold Gas Utilities Accountable
Assemblymember Emily Gallagher and Senator Kristen Gonzalez are pushing a bill to mandate that gas utilities tell New Yorkers where and when they’re digging up streets, and give communities a real say in cleaner, cheaper alternatives. Sane Energy is thrilled to help launch this legislation and fight for transparency, lower bills, and safer, healthier neighborhoods.
Take Action! If you are with an organization that would like to issue a memo of support for the bill, or if you would like to attend a teach-in about the bill hosted by the NY Geothermal Energy Organization, please email kim@saneenergy.org or reply to this email.
Stay safe and stay warm. We know it’s cold out there, so we postponed our February 2nd Fossil Fuel Walking Tour to February 22nd. Join us and find out how to get involved in the movement.
With all our love,
Kim, Elliot, Mike, JK, and Claire
