As the leaves turn to bright orange, red, and yellow, we won’t just be taking in the scenery—we’ll be sowing the seeds of change and caring for our movement's roots. Last week, we mobilized an audience at the City of New York York’s Graduate Center to join our public power campaign. We also hit the streets in Greenpoint with a walking tour of National Grid’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility, during which we imagined how we could turn the 120 acres the facility sits on into something that benefits the community. Join us this week to keep tending to the deep roots of our movement for climate justice so we can stay strong during the storms to come.
Together, let's continue to cultivate a sustainable future for all.
Last week marked the first of ten Public Power Town Halls at the City University of New York (CUNY). This series is a partnership between CUNY’s Professional Staff Congress (PSC) and the Public Power NY coalition to provide a platform for discussing transforming New York’s energy system. Decarbonizing CUNY campuses and helping adjacent neighborhoods move to affordable, renewable power needs is an essential step in the energy transition.
The town hall took place at CUNY’s Graduate Center and featured Sane Energy's Michael Paulson, Assembly Member Robert Carroll, and Professor Ashley Dawson. In breakout sessions, participants shared their visions for CUNY and our energy system. The event ended with attendees sending letters to Governor Hochul demanding public renewables, green jobs, lower utility bills, and an end to polluting peaker plants.
The weather might be cooling off, but our walk-and-roll tours of National Grid’s Greenpoint LNG facility are heating up! Sane Energy continues to lead monthly tours and info sessions to raise awareness about the facility, which pollutes the neighborhood and costs an exorbitant amount to maintain. We should be retiring fossil fuel plants like this!
We were thrilled to see many new people eager to take action and transform the 120 acres the facility sits on into a real community benefit, such as a compost and remediation education center, a bird sanctuary, or a boardwalk nature walk. The enthusiasm we felt from the participants inspired us to keep pushing for change!

Here’s how you can link up with us in the streets.
Wed, Sept 11, at 6:00 p.m. Join us for a tour of NYC's largest fossil fuel depot in North Brooklyn. This toxic facility lies adjacent to homes, businesses, and playgrounds. We can shut it down and build something that will benefit New Yorkers.
🔥 Take Action: Walk & Roll Tour of NYC's Largest Fossil Fuel Depot 🛢️
🗓️ Wednesday, Sept 11, 2024
🕔 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM
📍 Cooper Park, Maspeth Ave, Brooklyn, NY MAP
We won’t pay to be poisoned! Did you know NYC’s biggest fossil fuel depot is in North Brooklyn and sits next to homes, schools, and playgrounds? To make matters worse, we’re extending the life of this toxic facility when we pay our monthly utility bills! National Grid wants YOU to foot the bill for this depot, which endangers our health!💰🚨
Join the No North Brooklyn Pipeline and Sane Energy Project for an info session and walking tour of the LNG (Liquefied "Natural" Gas) facility to learn how we are working to transform this site into 120 acres that benefit the community, not National Grid’s shareholders.
Climate change is here, bringing extreme heat, brutal cold, massive wildfires, devastating hurricanes, and previously unimaginable floods. We CAN build an energy system that does not harm us! 👊🔥
Thursday, Sept 12 at 12:30 pm Let’s move City Tech Forward with Renewable Energy, Starting with a Town Hall, Y’all
📅 When: September 12th, 12:30 PM
📍 Where: Library Building Amphitheater, LG-30, City Tech (300 Jay St, Brooklyn) MAP
In partnership with Public Power NY and campus leaders, CUNY’s Professional Staff Congress Environmental Justice Working Group is hosting this critical town hall. Our goal? To educate and mobilize our communities to push the New York Power Authority to release an aggressive decarbonization plan this winter that fully implements the Build Public Renewable Act.
🗣️ Hear from Kim Fraczek, Sane Energy’s director, and New York State Assemblymember Emily Gallagher as we make our voices heard for a cleaner, greener future for CUNY’s 300+ buildings.
Sunday, Sept 15 at Noon! Governor Hochul is a Climate Arsonist, and She Should Stop Blowing Smoke.
Several communities in NYC suffer from toxic peaker plants, which have polluted their air and harmed our planet for too long. 🏭 Asthma rates are sky-high in places like the South Bronx, Williamsburg, and Astoria because of these plants. But we won a victory last year: by law, all NY peaker plants will be shut down by 2030.
🚨 But Governor Hochul is stalling progress. By 2030, we need 15 gigawatts of renewable energy to meet our climate goals and build a sustainable, affordable, and fair energy system.
On Sunday, September 15th, join us in NYC to demand action!
12:00 - 2:00 pm, Grand Ferry Park, adjacent to the fracked gas plant. MAP
✊ Together, we can secure:
🌱 Cleaner air & lower energy bills
💼 High-quality union jobs
⚡ A reliable, renewable energy system for all
Let’s show Hochul that New Yorkers won’t settle for anything less! 💪
