⛓️💥 Juneteenth Call to Action: Join the Fight for Public Power and Renewable Energy in Puerto Rico
Let's continue the fight for collective liberation and justice together!
Today, we observe Juneteenth, established as a federal holiday in 2021 but celebrated since 1866 to uplift the liberation of enslaved people. We reflect on the enduring legacy of slavery and the continuing struggle for collective liberation and justice.
The roots of our modern-day fossil fuel economy embody the same exploitative practices that fueled the slave trade, where labor and lives were sacrificed for the wealth and power of a few.
This system thrives on environmental racism, which creates disproportionate and devastating impacts of climate change on marginalized communities and damages our water, air, and soil. Juneteenth is an inspiring celebration that reminds us to defy the odds and strive for progress throughout our lifetime.
Happy Juneteenth, y'all!
Wed 6/19 5:30 pm ⛓️💥 Help break the chains: Energy Independence for Puerto Rico NOW ☀️🇵🇷
Puerto Rico has always had problems with its electric grid first due to colonial government mismanagement and more recently to privatization. Currently, the private energy companies LUMA Energy (owned by Quanta in Houston, TX and ATCO in Alberta, Canada) and GeneraPR (subsidiary of New Fortress Energy, a liquefied "natural" gas (LNG) company owned by American billionaire and Milwaukee Bucks franchise owner, Wes Edens) are responsible for running the island’s electric system and generating its power.
The people of Puerto Rico, los Boricuas, say NO to gasification and all fossil fuels and demand public power and renewable energy.
Join us on Wednesday, Juneteenth, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm at the offices of New Fortress Energy at 111 W 19th St MAP to demand that LUMA and GeneraPR leave the island so that green, sustainable energy solutions controlled by the people of Puerto Rico can flourish.
Report: We kicked off the week at Governor Hochul’s office - Public Power Press Conference
Sane Energy is a core member of the Public Power NY Coalition. On Monday, we hosted a press conference to announce “A People's Plan for Public Renewables.”
Since Governor Kathy Hochul took office, she has failed to keep New York on track to meet its climate goals. During her tenure, NY’s share of renewable energy has barely increased—less than 1%! And this is before several private developers canceled major renewable energy projects last year.
That’s why we prioritized passing the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA) in 2023 — because we knew the private market wouldn’t address the climate crisis at a just and necessary scale. But since the bill’s passage, the Governor has failed to unleash the full potential of public renewables to meet our climate goals, create tens of thousands of union jobs, lower our utility bills, and enable us to close polluting peaker plants.
At Monday’s event, we stood with labor leaders, elected officials, and environmental justice organizers to announce our demands for the BPRA Buildout. And we put the governor on notice: Our vision for a historic expansion of public renewables is the only real option!

Thurs 6/20 at 7:00pm: Sane Energy Project Supports the Summer of Heat Planning Call
The Summer of Heat coalition invites everyone to participate in a Mass Action Call on June 20 to get involved in the Gulf South Solidarity Week of Actions in New York City from June 21 - 30!
We are excited to support this campaign as the fight to shut down liquified “natural” gas (LNG) stretches from the waves of the Southern Gulf Coast to the inlet waters of North Brooklyn’s Newtown Creek (picture above) continues. During this call, the coalition will unveil plans for an incredible week of action and will share their vision for a summer of nonviolent civil disobedience targeting the New York City headquarters of the banks, investors, and insurance companies fueling climate chaos.
Sane Energy on the Indy Radio Hour!
On June 4th, before we received news that the NY HEAT Act failed to pass before New York’s legislative session expired, our Director, Kim Fraczek, spoke with Indypendent editor John Tarleton about the importance of closing the toxic Greenpoint Energy Center, the We Won’t Pay to Poisoned” action on June 2nd, and the possibilities inherent in the NY HEAT Act.
Save the date, Tue, July 2: Learn About North Brooklyn LNG starting at McGolrick Park in Greenpoint
On July 2nd, we will host an info session starting at 6:00 pm, followed by a walking tour or car tour (for differently abled folx) to see the liquified “natural gas (LNG) vaporizers in Greenpoint and learn how Sane Energy is fighting to block construction by National Grid.
Refreshments will be served. Please join us!
