Wow. Hochul administration shrugs rather than taking action on climate.
According to a report filed by New York state agencies on June 1, 2024, the state has failed to take meaningful action in the fight against climate change. New York is falling short of meeting its legally binding renewable energy targets for 2030. Governor Hochul’s response is appalling–shrug, move the goalposts, and let the private sector continue to call the shots.
Is the governor forgetting that the 2023 Build Public Renewables Act represents a major opportunity for the state to meet its goals? Or is she simply prioritizing corporate profits over public health and the future of the planet?
Sane Energy Project has been challenging corporate utilities and their enablers in state government in rate case proceedings for the past five years, and here’s what we’ve seen: local activists and groups like Sane Energy are the only ones asking the tough questions while state regulators side with utilities in their blatant disregard of the climate crisis. Put simply, the state’s lack of urgency and unwillingness to challenge the status quo jeopardizes life on our planet.
Hurricane Beryl has killed dozens of people and destroyed millions of homes while heat waves and wildfires break records.
New York deserves a leader who takes meaningful action to protect our planet and our people. We demand that Governor Hochul step up and make substantial investments in public power to protect our planet. The next five years are critical in our fight to protect the planet. Please send a message to Governor Hochul to build 15GW of public renewables by 2030, not 2033 or 2035.
Sane Energy’s Climate Justice Walking Tour Was a HIT! Let’s do it again on August 1!
On July 2, we hosted a meeting and walking tour to view National Grid’s liquified natural gas (LNG) vaporizers in Greenpoint and share information on how Sane Energy is fighting to block the company’s expansion of its leaky, toxic gas system, which will raise utility bills for its already overburdened customers.
Gas systems should be RETIRED, NOT REPLACED! New York State law requires that we get off all fossil fuels by 2050 to mitigate the climate disasters unfolding in real-time. We shouldn’t be handing over 3.8 BILLION dollars for National Grid to invest in its decrepit gas system! Join us on August 1 to learn more and to take action!
