Sane Energy in The News
The extreme weather events we’ve experienced in recent months that are fueled by burning and extracting fossil fuels have destroyed homes, communities, and ecosystems. At the same time these catastrophic events unfolded, utility bills skyrocketed. Corporations are making record profits while doing everything they can to delay a just transition to renewable energy.
Last Friday, Con Edison proposed a whopping rate hike of 11.4% on electricity bills and 13.3% on gas bills for next year. Kim Fraczek, Sane Energy’sDirector, was quoted on Sunday in WNYC’s Weekend Edition and The Gothamist:
“Con Edison has already received a huge increase in revenue from ratepayers that are struggling with their monthly bills, and we need to make sure that they are actually prioritizing New Yorkers,” said Kim Fraczek, head of the clean energy group, the Sane Energy Project.
In the same article, a spokesperson from Governor Hochul’s office said that the governor “strongly opposes” any effort to increase New Yorkers' living costs. We expect Governor Hochul to put her money where her mouth is and stand up to corporate utilities by instructing the Public Service Commission (PSC) to protect New Yorkers from corporations that prioritize profit over people and the planet. Renewable Heat NOW! NY Heat Act & GAP Fund Day of Action
This week, Sane Energy showed up in Albany with Renewable Heat Now to push for the NY Heat Act and the GAP Fund. Over 300 New Yorkers on 30 teams visited 154 legislators' offices to persuade them to pass the NY Heat Act and GAP Fund legislation.
The NY HEAT Act will cap utility bills at 6% of income and remove subsidies to prop up the gas industry’s expansion, funded by money coming directly from our pockets via our monthly bills.
The GAP Fund provides funding to help New Yorkers access energy efficiency funding that currently faces obstacles like roof and foundation repairs, and lead, mold, and asbestos hazards. The bill also provides tenant protections so residents are not displaced due to building improvements.
Thursday, Feb 6 at 6:30 pm: Climate, Jobs & Justice NYC Mayoral Candidate Forum
The election for NYC’s next mayor is heating up, and the Democratic primary in June is just around the corner. It's time to find out which candidates are ready to fight for our future!
We will question the candidates on key issues for New York City: Utility rate hikes, public power, and shutting down toxic gas infrastructure, like National Grid’s LNG fracked gas facility in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, are on the agenda.
Let's show them we mean business and demonstrate the urgency of moving to a renewable future. Attend in person or watch the livestream on Sane Energy’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
Feb 8 & 9: Two Weekend Events with Sane Energy and the No North Brooklyn Pipeline Alliance!
Sat, Feb 8 at 3:30 pm: Join us for an inclusive, all-ages dye workshop where we’ll create powerful art for an upcoming mobilization in early May to shut down the Greenpoint LNG depot. Discover the magic of dyeing fabrics with locally sourced plants while forging a deep connection with our environment. Your creations will become essential elements of LIVING SOILS RISING, an immersive performance that will bring together hundreds of participants in a shared vision for a sustainable energy future. Accessible venue. Light refreshments provided. Let's craft a vibrant statement together!
Even if you can’t make it in person, you can have a significant impact by filing a comment with the Public Service Commission to shut down the LNG facility.
Sun, Feb 9 at 3:00 pm: Join the No North Brooklyn Pipeline Alliance and Sane Energy Project for an info session and walking tour of the Greenpoint LNG (Liquefied "Natural" Gas) facility to learn how we are working to transform this site into 120 acres that serve the community, not an investor-owned corporation.
With all our love,
Kim, Michael, Jeanne, Elliot, JK, Hennessy, and Claire!
