💪✨A Setback, Not a Surrender: Our Movement Will Rise to the Challenge
A True Step Forward: Public Power Grows Stronger
By now, you may have read that the New York State Assembly failed to pass the NY HEAT Act despite overwhelming public support. But please know that you are part of a powerful movement that provoked desperate opposition from the fossil fuel industry and its best buddies in Albany—Governor Kathy Hochul and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie.
The NY HEAT Act included a trifecta of vital measures that would:
Protect vulnerable communities from corporate utility vultures
Update outdated laws to enable renewable heating and cooling solutions
Halt outsized handouts to the most heavily subsidized industry on the planet
During the months-long legislative session that ended last Friday, over one hundred legislators and thousands of activists spoke up in Albany and across the state for the passage of this important bill that would have shielded us from unconscionable rate hikes and polluting energy practices.
We know we’re onto something when the fossil fuel industry panics about a bill and pulls out all its stops to influence our government to squash it. Our movement ignited relentless momentum to end corporate utility domination. The next legislative session starts in January unless the NYS Assembly calls for a “special session” this summer!
🤞We start TODAY to put things in place so we can return stronger than ever in the new year.
Thur 6/13: Attend the last Renewable Heat Now Power Hour until September
Get ready to join Renewable Heat Now on Thursday, June 13th, at 7 PM for our final Power Hour before September! Let's come together to celebrate the incredible campaign we executed, review what happened in the last days of the legislative session, and share some thrilling updates on our ongoing efforts.
Public Power: A People's Plan for Public Renewables
With the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA), the Public Power coalition made history by passing the most ambitious Green New Deal law in the United States! Now, it's time to unleash its full potential. Governor Hochul must meet our climate goals, create tens of thousands of green jobs, lower utility bills, and shut down polluting peaker plants.
Join us alongside elected officials, labor leaders, Environmental Justice organizers, and ratepayer advocates as we rally for the BPRA Buildout! We're sending a clear message to the governor: Embrace the people's vision for public renewables and lead us to a brighter, greener future!
Climate Change Superfund Act Passes!
We congratulate and thank our movement comrades at NY Renews, NYPIRG, Food & Water Watch, and Fridays For Future for getting the Climate Change Superfund Act over the finish line before this year’s legislative session ended. The bill will make polluters pay $3 billion a year for climate mitigation, adaptation, and resiliency projects in the interest of all New Yorkers, lifting the financial burden off the backs of ordinary people and into the hands of the corporate criminals who’d love to shirk their responsibility to clean up the mess they’ve made and help fund the shift to clean, renewable solutions.
